I was looking online for some kind of quote to post in acknowledgement of fathers on father’s day. I came across a couple that caught my eye and vibrated with my feelings about my father. The first one is from Tom Wolfe, the author of Bonfire of the Vanities:
“Sherman made the terrible discovery that men make about their fathers sooner or later… that the man before him was not an aging father but a boy, a boy much like himself, a boy who grew up and had a child of his own and, as best he could, out of a sense of duty and, perhaps love, adopted a role called Being a Father so that his child would have something mythical and infinitely important: a Protector, who would keep a lid on all the chaotic and catastrophic possibilities of life.”
I thought this quote certainly describes me in the role of father. I am nothing but a boy that is doing his best to fill the role of protector to my child. Somehow it doesn’t seem that it describes my father though. I suppose I haven’t made Sherman’s terrible discovery yet. My father has always been the steady even tempered type. I can only remember once that I saw him angrily upset about something. He has always been quite affable and lovable.
The second quote that I found is from Jimmy Piersal the major league baseball player that spanked his teammate’s 4 year old son during a game (and got sent to the minors). I thought it was funny enough to post and maybe give all you father’s out there a walk down memory lane as well as a good laugh:
“Spread the diaper in the position of the diamond with you at bat. Then fold second base down to home and set the baby on the pitcher’s mound. Put first base and third together, bring up home plate and pin the three together. Of course, in case of rain, you gotta call the game and start all over again.”
Of course with all of the plastic new being used for diapers, these instructions are merely fun to read. These days it just takes the ability to peel a couple of strips of paper and wrap. But I thought it was funny to have diaper use instructions translated into a language that most guys can understand.
Happy father’s day Dad!
